Hygiene and safety
Sanitation, cross-contamination prevention, safe setup and breakdown, waste handling. The part that decides whether anything else matters.
Spontaneous Ink runs a tattoo apprenticeship in Barbados: a six-month target programme, taught in phases, with real reviews along the way. You finish when your work says you're ready — not when the calendar does.
You finish able to work.
Phase one is fundamentals and controlled practice: hygiene and cross-contamination, safe setup and breakdown, design and stencils, line control, machine setup, depth and hand speed, packing and shading, consent, records and aftercare.
Phase two is supervised client work. It starts after a review, not after a set number of weeks, and you earn a commission on the work you do.
Six months is the target. The studio can extend it if the skills aren't there yet, and being told that straight is part of the deal.
You finish when the studio confirms it — including a small, detailed tattoo done safely to studio standard and healed work that holds up. From there you can be considered for a place as a resident artist.
There's no fee to join, and there's a weekly stipend while you're learning. Apply by DM or WhatsApp — serious enquiries only, and bring work you've actually drawn.
Before you ever touch a client, this is the ground you cover — and keep covering.

Machine setup, line control, safe depth and hand speed — worked on flash and practice skin until it's steady.
Drawing, stencils and placement; black and colour packing, shading, skin awareness and knowing when a piece is being overworked.
Consent, records, aftercare, confidentiality and talking to people properly — plus studio procedures, conduct and working alongside the rest of the team.
Apprentices past and present, and the work they've put out.
